Visual differentiation is only effective when used sparingly — it creates hierarchy by contrast.
Research background
First described by Hedwig von Restorff (1933) in memory research. In visual perception, this maps to the figure-ground principle and salience theory — isolated items become figure; repeated items become ground. In UI, the effect is achieved through: (1) Colour contrast (one accent colour among neutral ones). (2) Size difference (one larger element among equal-sized ones). (3) Shape contrast (one rounded element among rectangular ones). (4) Motion (one animated element among static ones). Design trap: using Von Restorff for multiple elements simultaneously destroys the effect for all of them — each element needs the contrast of its peers to stand out.
